Phool Makhana or popped lotus seeds is an organic non-cereal nutritious food which is normally found in the stagnant water of lakes, tanks, ponds and wetlands. This is normally used to make makhana kheer, a sweet dish which is commonly consumed after fasting. Although some prefer to eat it raw or boiled, mostly it is used as an ingredient in Indian recipes.
These lotus seeds are generally collected in late summers. They are roasted and fried which gives them the popped up appearance like popcorn. You can use the seeds of makhana to make tasty popcorn in which you can add your favourite flavour like butter or honey. Mix a little bit of oil or butter along with spices with phoolmakhana and it can turn into a light snack. It is a lesser known fact that seeds of the makhana are used for Ayurvedic medicines. The seeds are also known to have aphrodisiac properties. Suitable for arthritis, premature ageing and impotence, it can be consumed on a regular basis to get rid of these health problems.
